An Invitation to the Community
Reflect in a wash of electronic and acoustic sound with Garrett Schumann, Sara Tea, and Julie Zhu
Set against two of the most iconic locations on the University of Michigan’s campus, the Resonant Soundscapes series mixes stunning acoustic sounds and intricate electronic textures to emphasize the meaningful resonances that emerge between people and the spaces they occupy.
Resonant Soundscapes is made possible by the support of the University of Michigan Arts Initiative and the Ann Arbor District Library.

Resonant Soundscapes begins at 5:30pm on November 3 with a sound tour of the Ingalls Mall and Burton Memorial Tower located at 230 N. Ingalls Street in Ann Arbor.
This unique performance features carillon improvisation by Julie Zhu occurring simultaneously with an ambient electornic headphone listening experience composed by Garrett Schumann and Sara Tea. Attendees will listen both individually and communally as they explore this iconic location on the University of Michigan’s central campus.
Please bring headphones (earbuds recommended) and an internet-connected device
A limited supply of wired headphones and smartphone adapters will be available for those whose need them. The ambient electronic headphone listening experience will be streamed from YouTube.
This is a family-friendly and all-ages event. Attendees will be invited to explore the space, including the Charles Baird Carillon, Burton Memorial Tower, and Ingalls Mall, as they wish during the performance.

Resonant Soundscapes will continue at 2pm on November 10 in Blanche Anderson Moore Organ Recital Hall within the Earl V. Moore building located at 1100 Baits Drive in Ann Arbor.
This performance will present an unparalleled, contemplative listening experience that includes a live sound bath by Sara Tea as well as the world premieres of a new electronics composition by Garrett Schumann and a new work for organ by Julie Zhu. This event also features a special appearance by organist Latimer Rogland.

Garrett Schumann is a composer, music writer, and scholar who lives in Ypsilanti, MI. Over the last three years, Garrett has expanded his creative focus to include more work with electronics software and hardware, as well as experimental presentations. Garrett’s research concerns systems of social, political, and economic exclusion in American and European music. His writing and scholarship to this end has been published in The New York Times, Grove Music Online, and Chamber Music Magazine.

Julie Zhu is a composer, artist, and carillonist. Her current research centers on creative and ethical use of AI in music. One project is a deep learning model on the sound of drawing as a visual co-performer. Julie works a lot with boxes, placing herself and other musicians in boxes for performances, and recently, has been thinking a lot about gentle noises.

Sara Tea is an artist, musician, DJ and performer over the past two decades has worked to create immersive sound and art experiences that aim to dismantle the hierarchies of creative spaces in favor of forming inclusive and encouraging environments. saratea.com
